For individuals looking to reunite with their families, Canada provides a number of ways through which Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their family members to Canada.
Spousal Visa
A citizen or permanent resident of Canada is eligible to sponsor his/her spouse who is legally married to the individual. Spousal visa for two individuals of the same sex is also permitted provided that the country he/she is applying from allows such a case.
Dependent Child Visa
This visa can be used to sponsor one’s own or partner’s dependent children who are 19 years of age or lower. This way the dependent children can eventually work, study or acquire permanent resident status in Canada in the long term. This visa serves the purpose of reuniting families physically separated from one another.
Common-Law Partner Visa
Through this visa an applicant can stay with his/her common-law partner (same or opposite sex) in Canada. Sponsors of this visa must plan to live with and provide sustenance for their partner financially. Individuals who are successful are permitted to live, work or study for an indefinite period in Canada.
Conjugal Partner Visa
This visa allows individuals who are detached from their partners (same or opposite sex) due to barriers such as political instability and discrimination etc. Successful applicants are permitted to work or study in Canada.
Parental and Grandparental Super Visa
An individual willing to sponsor their parents or grandparents to Canada can do so via the Super Visa which was introduced as of January, 2014. The sponsor must keep in mind that he/she must be able to support the other party financially without government support.
Remaining Relative Visa
This visa serves the purpose of reuniting extended relatives of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who do not have any close family members currently residing in Canada. The individual can sponsor one other person from abroad irrespective of family relationship or age restrictions. The successful candidate is then eligible for permanent residency in Canada.
